About the Author

My poetry has been published or is forthcoming in Rattle, The Colorado Review, The Pinch Journal, Rust & Moth, SWIMM, The Night Heron Barks, Cider Press Review, Inflectionist Review, The West Review, UCity Review, Sky Island Journal, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Pine Hills Review, Menacing Hedge and many others. I recently won the West Trestle Review’s 2021 Poetry Contest, Sweet Literary’s 2021 Poetry Contest, and Equinox’s 2021 Poetry Contest, and was a Finalist in the River Heron Review’s 2021 Poetry Contest and Gigantic Sequins 2021 Poetry Contest. I am Associate Poetry Editor of the Maine Review, and my debut poetry collection These Few Seeds came out in April 2021 from Terrapin Books, a small, independent publisher run by a poet, Diane Lockward. Garrison Keillor recently selected 2 poems from These Few Seeds to read this winter on his program, The Writer’s Almanac. I received a Masters in Writing from Wesleyan University in 2006 and work as the Program Director for the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance (mainewriters.org). I live in Portland, Maine with my young daughter and husband. Every day, although I work to support my family, I also snatch time to work diligently on the my poetry. I do this to model for my daughter that a woman's art is important, that her time is important, and that her contributions to the world outside the home are necessary. Much of my work can be read at my website, meghansterling.com.

Praise For…

Throughout this splendid book, grounded in the intimate joys and trepidations
of new motherhood, there is a broad undercurrent of foreboding about the kind
of world we are bequeathing to our children—a world ravaged by pervasive
environmental degradation, pandemic, and political strife. But Meghan
Sterling knows well Auden’s dictum that “poetry is the clear expression of
mixed emotions.” Her unflinching depiction of the imperiled world that her
daughter will likely inherit is tempered by the abiding lessons of her Jewish
ancestral history, a reverence for the natural world in all its seemingly
unstoppable splendor, and an unquenchable hope that the future is ours to
redeem: “. . . to you I bequeath / all the courage / of birds and flowers, / water
and stones, / to love enough, / to love with the toughness of trees.”
